Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE)

Dr. Sue Friedman, Executive Director of FORCE

FORCE: Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (http://www.facingourrisk.org) is a national nonprofit organization that focuses on hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Most of the women on FORCE have been touched in some way by cancer, either directly or through a family member.  Many of the women on FORCE qualify for this study or have sisters who do.  Even before the Sister Study began enrolling women, FORCE supported it.  Although I have no sisters and did not personally qualify, I was proud of my part helping to pilot test study procedures and materials during the development and planning stage of the study.  As Executive Director of FORCE it's important to be a role model with respect to participation in research, and I have reminded our constituency that if we want better answers about causes of cancer, we must participate in research.  We have a link to the study web site through our message boards and several of our members have been vocal about their enrollment in the study.  As a community, FORCE members appreciate the research that is being done to better determine the causes of breast cancer, and we are grateful to the Sister Study researchers and staff for their efforts.
